My office is very diverse with employees from 14 different countries working together (at least for the most part). There are many Latin-Americans, needless to say. Football (NFL) and soccer (the “real” football) often take center stage during lunch hours. The never ending argument is why American Football is called “Football” when everything except the field goal kicking and punting happens without any contact of the ball with the leg. Although, no one has ever given any explanation that is reasonable, maybe I did find an explanation to it.
A football is called a football because it is a one-foot long ball. Simple!
